Abstract

Neck pain is a highly frequent musculoskeletal pathology that affects 50% of modern society. Amongst the currently available different therapeutic approaches, none is clearly superior in the short and long term. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new therapeutic strategies to address this problem. The purpose of this research is to investigate whether a single application of the sphenobasilar decompression osteopathic technique produces changes in the range of motion of the suboccipital spine and in the threshold of pain in the trigger points of the suboccipital muscles. For this, 69 male and female subjects with cervical pain, between 14 and 40 years old, participated in a double-blind randomized controlled clinical study, being divided into three groups: A, B and control. The control group received placebo treatment and groups A and B were treated with the sphenobasilar decompression technique. Statistically significant values were obtained for group A, implying improvement in suboccipital extension, also for group B in cervical flexion. There were no significant changes for pain threshold in either group.
