Abstract

Fibromyalgia (FM) has pain as its main symptom, which directly reflects on the patient's quality of life. Even so, it presents a refractory profile to several forms of treatment. The objective of the present study was to identify the main osteopathic techniques and the effects obtained in the treatment of patients with FM. This study is an integrative review and searches were used in Medline/Pubme and PEDro databases and academic google repository. Data collection took place on December 13, 2022 using the descriptors osteopathy and fibromyalgia in Portuguese, English and Spanish, which were separated by Boolean operators AND and/or OR. The inclusion criteria were: subjects with fibromyalgia, osteopathic interventions associated or not with other therapies, comparison group or not, the outcomes were related to the type of techniques and the observed effects and that they were types of studies such as clinical trial, pilot study, report or case study and case series. After collection, the data were tabulated and transcribed into figures and tables. The results observed in the six included studies regarding the most recurrent techniques were: high speed and low amplitude, joint mobilizations, global osteopathic treatment, myofascial techniques, craniosacral osteopathy, visceral techniques and muscle energy techniques. In addition, the main effects observed were the reduction of medication intake, improvement in quality of life and reduction in pain intensity. Finally, it was observed that osteopathy seems to improve limiting aspects in the management of patients with FM, such as pain intensity and quality of life; however, more robust studies with more adequate methodological quality and better homogeneity between groups are needed. In addition, studies with a larger sample size and better methodological rigor regarding randomization and use of the control group are suggested.
