Effectiveness of Osteopathic Treatment in intestinal constipation
Abstract
Intestinal constipation is considered a dysfunction of the functional type of the intestine, which is characterized by a disorder of gastrointestinal motility and by difficult or diminished evacuations. Prevention and treatment must be personalized, considering behavioral guidelines, in addition to possible pharmacological intervention or alternative therapies such as Osteopathy. Objectives: to review the literature on the effects of osteopathic treatment in intestinal constipation. Method: Lilacs, Medline, PubMed, Scielo and PEDro electronic databases were searched for literature. Result: from the Osteopathic approach in the treatment of constipation, its objective is to improve the functioning of the intestine, influencing the tone of the smooth muscles and visceral mobility, improving gastrointestinal function and indirectly, normalizing the nervous supply of the viscera. The fascia is formed by a continuous three-dimensional intracellular matrix, provided by mechanoreceptors, enveloping and protecting the tissues and organs of the body. That is why the results obtained after osteopathic techniques are justified by the mechanical, autonomic and neuromuscular properties. Conclusion: Osteopathy is a complementary treatment for intestinal constipation, improving symptoms, decreasing severity, colonic transit time, increasing intestinal motility and thus the quality of life of patients.
